A Brief History of the Dofasco Pipe Band

The band was formed in Hamilton, Ontario Canada in 1938 as the Dominion Foundries and Steel Company Oversea’s Veterans' Association Pipe Band under Pipe Major Alex Stewart. Major Huntley Gordon OBE, a DOFASCO vice president and president of the Veterans' Association was named honourary president of the pipe band. Major Gordon obtained special permission from the Gordon Highlanders for this new band to wear the Gordon Regimental Tartan, of which the band still wears today.

In the late 1950's the company took over from the Veterans' Association to become the band’s sole sponsor. With the company changing it’s name from Dominion Foundries and Steel Company to an acronym of that name, DOFASCO, so did the pipe band, becoming known as The DOFASCO Pipe Band. With the band being solely sponsored by DOFASCO Inc. since 1938, it enjoys the distinction of being the longest continually sponsored industrial pipe band in North America.

Today the band enjoys a long and proud history spanning six decades and over a half century of piping and drumming excellence.
